How would you like to apply your IT-business know-how to serve and protect your country? If so, the Department of Homeland Security has a job for you. The post: deputy CIO at the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, a job that pays between $131,342 and $142,500 annually.

Among the deputy CIO's numerous duties, described in a nearly 1,900-word job notice posted on the USAJobs Web site, are monitoring and evaluating the performance of the department's IT programs and acting on or advising the CIO whether to initiate, modify, or terminate programs and projects.

The listed qualifications include the ability to develop and implement an organizational vision; implement strategies that maximize employee potential; build coalitions; and perform IT strategic planning, investment management, and enterprise architecture in large, complex organizations.

The position describes a job much like the one that's been vacant since June 5 when Laura Callahan, a top aide to CIO Steve Cooper, went on administrative leave after a published report said she had obtained her bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees from Hamilton University, an alleged diploma mill. A department spokesman declined to comment on whether it's the same job.

Interested job seekers had better act quickly: Applications must be submitted by July 21.
