Security issues dominated the NetWorld+Interop trade show in Las Vegas this week, highlighting for network managers the contradictory goals of tightening security without hurting ease of use. While vendors pitched in with new security wares, none of them magically solved that dilemma, and customers said they're still waiting for products with the appropriate levels of security, manageability, and ease of use.

Notable launches included Cisco Systems' intrusion-detection devices and software; Enterasys' updated intrusion-detection system; Nortel's security gear for IP networks; Sprint's Internet Protocol virtual private network service; and WorldCom's managed security services offered in partnership with Internet Security Systems.
