A CompTIA survey shows security technologies are eclipsing nearly all other issues that IT professionals expect to deal with this year.
Security tops the list of technologies that IT professionals report will have the greatest impact on their businesses this year, according to a new survey.
The study, which was conducted by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), also showed that IT managers are paying an increasing amount of attention to security technologies. Security ranked second in CompTIA's 2006 Web poll but moved up to the top spot this year.
CompTIA is an IT industry association.
"Information security considerations affect virtually everything an organization does, whether it is internal e-mail communications, business-to-business data exchange or electronic commerce with consumers," said John Venator, president and chief executive officer of CompTIA, in a written statement. "The proliferation of devices that are now connected to networks, and the increasing mobility of customers and workers have pushed security to top of mind for everyone, from the technician monitoring the network to the business owners and operators whose livelihood can be at risk in the event of a security catastrophe."
The poll of more than 1,100 technology professionals showed that 24.3% of them said security technologies will have the greatest impact this year. Wireless data applications came in second with 13.1% giving it a top ranking. Convergence solutions, like VoIP, telephony and unified messaging, dropped from first place last year to third placed this year.
Open source solutions came in fourth. Rounding out the Top Ten list were virtualization technology, Web 2.0, radio frequency identification, network access control, business intelligence applications and storage.
