Security and data protection provider Symantec announced two Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions for small and midsize businesses, one aimed at online storage and one at online backup and disaster recovery. The first offering, Symantec Online Backup, joins the growing trend toward renting online storage to companies who'd rather not manage the hardware and IT requirements themselves. (See MozyPro and Amazon S3.) The storage will be hosted in Symantec-operated data centers, and clients will be able to browse and restore their backed-up data via a Web interface.
The second, Symantec Online Storage for Backup Exec, integrates the online storage options with Symantec's Backup Exec 12 server-based backup software. Online Storage for Backup Exec lets clients use a single interface to manage local and onine backup and restore. "Backup Exec customers can now immediately protect their critical data both onsite and offsite, for a total disaster recovery solution," according to the Symantec press release. The Register, CNN Money
