Alfresco Software has introduced an upgrade of its open-source enterprise content management software, adding better tools for collaboration and controlling Web content.

Among the enhancements within Labs 3 Final is a component framework for an AJAX-enabled Web user interface. In addition, the company has added a REST-based Web content management services API. The upgrade's new collaboration features include the ability to edit documents via the Microsoft SharePoint protocol. Alfresco has also added a Flex-based document previewer, an AJAX-based calendar and a links directory manager for sharing internal and external links. Alfresco's focus on collaboration in ECM started last October with the launch of Share, a collaboration system built into its commercial software The latest open-source version also includes support for content management interoperability services. CMIS is a set of Web services for sharing information among disparate content repositories. Along with the launch of Labs 3 Final this week, Alfresco also introduced Web Studio, a visual, drag-and-drop designer for building Web sites while leveraging the company's Web content managementruntime and repository. Web Studio is part of the Labs 3 Final release, which is available for download on Alfresco's Web site under the open-source GPL license.
