Cognos has made ReportNet, its Web-based business intelligence tool, available on Linux from Red Hat, the company said Monday. The update is designed to let IT managers integrate reporting and query functionality into their Linux applications.

The move by Cognos follows similar steps taken this year by BI rivals Hyperion and Business Objects to make their own applications available on Linux. IBM assisted Cognos with development of ReportNet on Linux as part of a multi-year agreement between the companies to push adoption of business intelligence among Linux users. IBM has a similar deal with Business Objects.

"Linux is now a mainstream platform, and customers are increasingly looking for greater choices," Cognos VP of business intelligence Jennifer Francis said in a prepared statement.

Cognos and Red Hat will jointly market ReportNet, Cognos said. Cognos partly credited brisk sales of ReportNet for a strong earnings performance in its fiscal second quarter.
