Cognos entered a technology partnership with Acorn Systems, a maker of costing and profitability analytics software, to produce integrated technology that helps customers gauge product and customer profitability.

Cognos will contribute several components to the partnership, including Enterprise BI Series, its main business intelligence product; Enterprise Planning Series, a budgeting, modeling and forecasting application, and Metrics Manager, which handles scorecarding.

Profit Analyzer, Acorn's contribution to the alliance, is designed to deliver visibility into cost, revenue, and capacity numbers down to the transactional level. Cognos hopes Acorn's ability to collect and model data quickly will boost Cognos' corporate performance management offerings.

Cognos and Acorn plan to target the financial services, distribution, consumer packaged goods and retail industries. The vendors share clients in those sectors, as well as in life sciences and government.
