MEGA International plans to incorporate the latest version of the business process modeling notation standard in the company's suite of modeling tools.

Among the benefits of incorporating the standard in the MEGA Modeling Suite is the ability to share business process information in a standard manner among business and technical groups, the company said. In addition, the standard can ensure interoperability between the MEGA suite and other vendors' tools using process modeling, such as those for business performance optimization, business process management and service-oriented architectures. Finally, the standard makes it possible to reuse models in third-party tools.

The Object Management Group released the latest BPMN standard in December, along with a language that defines the semantics of process models. As a result, business process modeling has a standardized graphical notation and a common language that bridges the gaps between dozens of existing modeling languages, tools, platforms and methodologies, MEGA said.

In addition, the OMG releases also provide an XML schema to ensure standard interchanges between the various business process modeling tools in the market, the company said. MEGA has participated in the development of the modeling technologies.

The purpose of the BPMN standard is to create models that can be understood by business managers, as well as IT staff, both of which have roles in the design and implementation of computer-automated business processes.

Among the new features in the upgraded suite is the unification of business-process notations for the modeling layers in the tools, better tracking of how business tasks are delegated to IT systems, and a consistent terminology for a clearer understanding of the process modeling between the various stakeholders, MEGA said.

The new version of the MEGA Modeling Suite is set for release in the first quarter. Competitors include IDS Scheer, Metastorm, which bought business process analysis vendor Proforma in August 2007; and Troux Technologies.
