Gamers with an iPhone will have some more titles to play soon, as Capcom said it's beefing up its support for the iPhone and iPod Touch

The company, which makes popular gaming franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil, currently has only one title for the iPhone, but it will be releasing more than 10 titles for the platform over the next year.

The move is driven by the success of the App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch, which has seen more than a billion downloads in less than a year. Games are routinely on the most-downloaded lists, and Capcom joins the likes of Sega and Electronic Arts as major game developers that are trying to capitalize on this.

With a large touch screen, 3-D graphics, accelerometer, and a well-developed distribution ecosystem, the iPhone has emerged as a strong player in the mobile gaming market. It was a big contributor to the rise in mobile gaming last year, and some believe it can eventually beat out Nintendo's DS and Sony's PlayStation Portable.

Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch may become even more attractive to game makers when the 3.0 software is released later this summer because it will add a host of new features. For example, Apple will add the ability for customers to make purchases within apps, and game developers could easily integrate this to let gamers buy extra costumes or weapons for their avatars.

Additionally, the 3.0 software will make it easier to build engaging multiplayer games because of the peer-to-peer networking abilities, and the push-notification system could be utilized by game makers in a variety of ways as well.
