aHewlett-Packard on Tuesday introduced hardware and software that can reallocate and manage resources across virtual and physical environments, reducing costs by avoiding excess storage capacity.

The new hardware includes the StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 6400 and 8400. The software is the SAN Virtualization Services Platform 2.1, a network-based storage virtualization technology that can reallocate resources to make better use of available storage and streamline operations by simplifying migration, replication, and backup.

HP is pitching the new products as a way to help companies reduce costs during the economic downturn. "HP offers an unprecedented range of solutions to help organizations emerge stronger when the economy recovers," Ann Livermore, executive VP of HP's Technology Solutions Group, said in a statement.

The HP StorageWorks EVA 6400 and EVA 8400 are available for a starting price of $24,240 and $61,456, respectively. The HP StorageWorks SVSP 2.1 has a list price of $37,180.

HP is offering virtualization technology from the client to the data center. Last month, the company introduced blade servers with Citrix XenDesktop 3 virtualization software preinstalled.

Available with HP's BladeSystem bc2800 and bc2200 Blade PCs, the combined technology targets companies looking to centralize desktop applications on the server, rather than deploying and managing them on employees' individual PCs. XenDesktop 3 makes it possible to build a virtual desktop in the data center and stream it to the desktop, where it will run under its own hypervisor on the end user's hardware.
