Intel has released an Atom-based platform targeted at home and small office networked storage devices.
The new platform comprises a single-core D410 or dual-core D510 Atom processor and the Intel 82801IR input/output controller. Manufacturers planning to use the package in storage products include LaCie, LG Electronics, QNAP, Synology, and Thecus, the chip maker said.
The latest technology is aimed at home server and small office/home office network-attached storage(NAS) devices that act as centralized hubs for organizing, managing, and sharing documents, photos, videos and music. Such devices are useful in locations with multiple computers.
The new platform features six PCI Express lanes, 12 USB 2.0 ports, a port multiplier function and eSATA ports that give equipment manufacturers the ability to add peripheral devices and expand storage capacity outside the box, according to Intel. Other features include hot plug capabilities for capacity upgrades and integrated gigabit Ethernet MAC controller for improved bidirectional data transfers to and from the storage device.
The platform supports Windows Home Server and Linux operating systems.
Intel on Thursday also announced embedded versions of the D410 and D510 and the single-core N450 Atom chip. The processors have a seven-year life cycle and are targeted at small, energy-efficient designs for print imaging, digital security surveillance and industrial market segments.
The three processors are paired with the Intel 82801HM controller, which offers I/O capabilities in two-processor devices via high-bandwidth interfaces, including PCI Express, PCI, SATA and USB 2.0 connectivity.
Intel's Atom product line is primarily found in netbooks, low-priced mini-laptops with screens from seven to 10 inches. However, Intel is developing versions of the low-power processors for other devices, particularly smartphones and mobile Internet devices.
