A friend of mine writes for Conan O'Brien. I knew he would do great things because not only did he test out of high school a year early, but he was a bigger smart ass than me. A friend of mine writes for Conan O'Brien. I knew he would do great things because not only did he test out of high school a year early, but he was a bigger smart ass than me. He took me to the Friar's Club once for dinner and broke his job down for me: slip in around 9 am, read newspapers for a couple hours combing for current events, and then write jokes. When the day was done, all the writers would go see whether their jokes made it on the show. On a good day, two or three make it. Now ain't that the life?Anyone who thinks writing jokes is easy hasn't tried it. And if you think writing jokes about technology is easy, well, you've just never tried to explore the humor in RTMP, or explored the knee-slapping thought of Reverse ARP. (An IP packet walks into a bar: "Have you seen SYN and ACK?" it asks the bartender, who replies: "ICMP.")

Once a year, I crawl out of my hollow shell of envy and offer up the kind of scraps the class would be left with when my friend would, invariably, get kicked out. The video below, which began our information 500 award ceremony, is my latest. I hope you enjoy it, and if you don't may your daughters all grow up to be David Letterman staff members.

I play weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Tweetups . . .
