New York City has started a pilot program to provide free Wi-Fi at public payphones.
The program currently has seven such hotspots in Manhattan, one in Queens, and two in Brooklyn just a few hundred feet apart. Additional spots will come online in the next few months.
New York, especially Manhattan, already is rich in Wi-Fi options from carriers and third parties. The physical installation in this case, according to Gigaom, is provided for free by Van Wagner Communications, which owns many of the city’s payphones.
No information was provided as to who was providing the actual Internet service for the hotspots.
