With the holidays fast approaching, is your anxiety picking up as your procrastination kicks in? As the flurry of responsibilities continues to pile on, here are some tips on how to at least avoid being sucked in to the depths of e-mail and the Internet. While cell phones are getting smarter and workers are able to telecommute from anywhere, it's no wonder people feel the need to check their e-mail constantly, find answers to queries immediately, and reply instantly. But is that the most productive way to work? How many times have you found yourself at the end of the workday having answered all your e-mails yet you haven't tackled that project with a deadline of half an hour ago?

Professional organizer Karena Gruber tackles the issue of getting behind on time at her Piece by Piece blog, and she offers four tips to climb out of your Internet black hole:

  • Turn off the automatic notifier and designate certain times of the day for e-mailing.

  • Before diving in to an e-mail exchange, determine if it is truly urgent and if a phone call would be faster.

Before launching into an Internet search, determine your goals, and if you find yourself straying, stop and make your way back.

Set a time limit and use a timer if necessary.

And if you need more help, publicist Paul Krupin has released his annual planner that provides a month-at-a-glance roadmap to holidays during the year and identifies the lead time for each holiday. Click here for the free download.
