British voters can cast their ballots online and by mobile phone this May in several local elections. But the experiment could turn sour, some experts say. "The technology isn't secure enough yet," claims Pete Chown, director of IT security and cryptography company Skygate Technology.

Chown fears that a Trojan horse, worm, or virus could be built to tamper with votes and subvert the voting process.

"If the election is placed online," he says, "it's much easier to interfere on a large scale" than it is with ballot boxes.
