Accenture unveils integration service for business-to-business exchanges.
Accenture made a strong commitment to the development of online business-to-business exchanges Monday by unveiling an integration service and partnerships with key software makers.
Through its eMarketplace Integration Solution, Accenture is promoting a packaged approach to online exchanges by integrating software from Microsoft, webMethods, Peregrine Systems, Click Commerce, and Intershop Communications. Accenture will integrate the different software pieces, adding customized features tailored for the utilities, metals and mining, forest products, and energy industries. The product's first client is Quadrem Group's mining, minerals, and metals online marketplace. Quadrem says it will make Accenture's services available to trading partners looking to integrate with the marketplace.
Accenture also revealed a partnership with SAPMarkets Inc., a subsidiary of software maker SAP, to develop and deliver private trading exchanges based on MarketSet, an application developed jointly by SAPMarkets and Commerce One Inc. Companies use MarketSet to create private, collaborative online exchanges with their clients and supply-chain partners.
Accenture acknowledges that the market for online marketplaces, particularly those that publicly serve industry consortiums, never rose above last year's hype because of security concerns and because their capabilities were limited to E-procurement, but the service provider says private exchanges with trusted partners will optimize supply-chain relationships through collaboration. "Technology isn't a barrier to entry for online marketplaces; it's the value derived from interacting online," says Lance Grether, an associate partner in Accenture's Enterprise Solutions business. MarketSet makes a big difference in the adoption of marketplace technology because it goes beyond online procurement to include tools for collaborative planning and design.
