Earlier this month Amazon released Kindle software for the iPhone and now it is talking about future mobile device plans.TechFlash has stumbled across a job posting from Amazon that shows the online retail giant is going to improve the mobile device shopping experience for consumers.
Mobile eCommerce is one of the fastest growing segments and Amazon is well-positioned to take its world-class customer experience and deliver it on mobile/wireless devices. The Amazon.com Wireless Products team is leading this initiative and will be continuing to build and improve ways for customers to shop with Amazon via their mobile device.
The technical requirements include experience with Java and XHTML, so that suggests Amazon will focus on widget-based technology like that supported by the iPhone, Palm Pre, and Windows Mobile 6.5.
Amazon currently has a Web site optimized for mobile browsers, but not all features are supported and it can be painful to just browse. If you use the site, it's best if you know exactly what you're looking for.
It is unknown whether or not this improved shopping experience will include buying Kindle ebooks for platforms besides the iPhone and Kindle itself. Whatever Amazon is ultimately aiming for, it wants it fast, because the "ability to achieve results in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment is critical."
Amazon also has an MP3 music store with no DRM protection on any of the content. Since just about all phones now have music-playing capabilities, it is feasible they could create an app that allowed users to browse music, listen to samples, and purchase right from the device. Since there is no DRM, users would be able to easily transfer their purchased music to their PC's later.
