According to sources referred to as "Verizon tipsters," Android 2.2 may be just around the corner for Verizon Wireless' roster of Android hardware.

Verizon and its manufacturer partners Motorola and HTC have been coy about when their devices will receive the Android 2.2 update. During the launch event, Verizon said that the Droid X, which went on sale July 15, would receive Android 2.2 Froyo "this summer." That gives Verizon and Motorola well into September before they need to get serious about providing an update.

To the best of my knowledge, Verizon has not confirmed that the Droid and Droid Incredible will receive Android 2.2 updates, though HTC said that Incredible owners can expect to see Froyo before the end of 2010.

This new information, which comes from AndroidSpin, is said to be solid. AndroidSpin reports, "A Verizon tipster ... claims that the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, and the Motorola Droid will be receiving the Android 2.2 update at the same time. He also stated that this not a rumor, but confirmed. He said that HTC and Motorola will release Android 2.2 simultaneously and will start pushing out the Android 2.2 update beginning August 6... It's expected to hit all of these devices by August 15."

Until Verizon confirms that Android 2.2 is indeed on the way for these handsets, be sure to refrain from becoming too excited.

By the way, the Droid X continues to be sold out at most Verizon Wireless retail stores and the Verizon Wireless Web sites. If you're lucky, you might find one hiding at a Best Buy or RadioShack location. If you're desperate for a Droid X, be sure to make some phone calls before going out on the hunt.

Samsung has committed to updating its Galaxy S line of handsets to Android 2.2 Froyo, as well. The Captivate and Vibrant are already on sale at AT&T and T-Mobile, respectively. Samsung and its two carrier partners have been mum on when Galaxy S handsets will be updated, though.
