According to everyone's favorite inside-information-getter, The Boy Genius says an Apple insider calls the unannounced and unconfirmed tablet "an iPhone on steroids." Just what does that mean?The Boy Genius says this information came from one its "Apple connects who [hasn't] steered [it] wrong." That source offers a few bullet points about the fabled Apple tablet computer:

Who knows if this is accurate at all, but I find it unlikely. I don't think Apple would make the mistake of simply boosting the specs of the iPhone/iPod Touch to make a tablet. That approach just doesn't make sense to me. Sure, web apps and services should be at the forefront of what this supposed tablet offers, but I'll be surprised if it lacks Apple's core OS X platform.

The Boy Genius' information on the OS does, however, match that of an earlier report which suggested the iSlate would have "Mac OS X Clouded Leopard v10.7."

That report also said the iSlate will have a seven-inch screen and run a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB shared L2 cache and 1066MHz system bus. It will be sold with 2GB of RAM, but will support up to 8GB. The iSlate will feature a 120GB SATA hard drive that spins at 4200rpm.

Other specs include a built-in iSight camera and projector; multitouch display with oleophobic coating; two USB ports and an SD slot; stereo speakers with mic and optical digital output; and gigabit ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

Apps installed include iTunes, Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, Photo Booth, and Front Row.

January 27, the supposed date of an Apple event in San Francisco, is two weeks away. We should know more in 14 days or so.
