The extra-cheap, extra-portable Asus Eee, available till now only with a Linux operating system pre-installed, will soon be available with Windows XP.Businesses interested in equipping their employees with an inexpensive but familiar portable computing option might be attracted to the new XP-based Eee. The system, described variously as a "micro laptop" and a "mobile Internet device," has a seven-inch display and a solid-state hard drive and weighs just over two pounds. It lists for $399.

Asus has always provided Windows drivers with the system, enabling users to load XP themselves, but the announcement means customers will be able to order XP preinstalled. The company did not announce when the XP Eee will be available for purchase (it's on display this week at CeBIT in Germany), nor how much the inclusion of a Windows OS will add the price.
