AT&T has launched the mobile version of its U-verse Internet television service for Windows Phone 7 smartphones.

The carrier released the application Tuesday, one day after AT&T and other carriers started offering smartphones running Microsoft's new mobile operating system in the U.S. AT&T said the service would be available for the HTC Surround, Samsung Focus and soon the LG Quantum, with more phones supported in the future.

To entice people to try U-verse Mobile, Widows Phone users can download the app from AT&T and watch TV shows at no charge for the first 30 days. U-verse TV customers who subscribe to the U100, U200 and U200 Latino packages can watch at no charge until Feb. 1, 2011. Following the trial periods, the service will cost $9.99 a month. Subscribers of the U300 package or higher get the mobile service at no additional charge.

U-verse Mobile subscribers can search a library of downloadable shows over a Wi-Fi wireless connection and watch them later. In addition, people who subscribe to AT&T U-verse home service can also schedule and manage DVR recordings using their smartphones.

AT&T, which is the exclusive carrier for the Apple iPhone in the U.S., has been a long-time supporter of Microsoft's previous mobile OS, Windows Mobile. AT&T has carried a variety of devices over the years, and now says it plans to be a major seller of Windows Phone smartphones.

AT&T said last month it planned to release a Windows Phone U-verse app. At the same time, the company announced it would make U-verse TV available through Microsoft's Xbox 360 video-game console starting Oct. 15.

In August, AT&T made it possible for people using the iPhone to download and watch TV shows through U-verse. AT&T overall strategy is to offer U-verse on as many devices as possible, beyond just the home TV.
