After several months of waiting (or two years for some, depending on how you look at it), AT&T has announced that on September 25, MMS will roll out to their 3G and 3GS iPhone customers.AT&T posted on their Facebook page earlier today the good news for many iPhone users. From the announcement:
We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We've been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches - and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.
We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone's multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.
Once September 25 rolls around, you should be able to download the software update and begin sending pictures to friends and family without having to rely on email, something many recipients don't necessarily have on their cell phone. Because the process of sending images will be easer to do now, AT&T has expected traffic to go up and they have been busy upgrading their network to ensure it can handle the extra traffic. We'll see how well that process has gone in three weeks.
Apple added MMS to iPhone 3.0 a few months ago but it only works on the 3G and 3GS phone, not the original iPhone. Worldwide, other carriers enabled MMS earlier this year as they started selling the 3GS. Shortly, the Americans will be able to join in the fun.
