What started as a hobby in 1995 quickly grew to become one of the most heavily relied upon sites for media and security professionals when it came to tracking Web-site defacements. But that is about to change because Attrition.org has said it will cease maintaining copies of hacked Web pages.

The group says the mirroring burden has grown too heavy. Within the past month, the group says, it has spent days mirroring more than 100 defaced Web sites. That's three times the total for 1995 and 1996 combined. In a statement, the group said the process of maintaining the mirror has become a "thankless chore."

But Attrition won't disappear altogether. The group will continue to perform statistical analyses of defacements, and will continue to provide commentary and articles on "high-profile defacements, significant trends, or other activity that warrants attention."
