As hobbies go, brewing beer is cheap. You can get started for less than $100, and justify the expense by the money saved not buying microbrews.

It's easy. Brewing your first batch will use up a lazy Sunday afternoon, and you'll have to work hard to make a serious mistake. All-grain brewing takes more time, but it's still a lot simpler than learning Perl.

You get the beer you like. Prefer a porter with a heavier mouth-feel? No problem. Want more hop aroma in your India Pale Ale? It's all under your control.

You'll be popular. Your friends will learn you can legally give away your beer (though not sell it), so they'll drop by to give you their empty bottles, hoping to leave with full ones.

Brewing is also a social activity, suitable for mellow afternoons on the porch.
