Best Buy has announced a new promotion that sees the retailer selling four different phones for free on each Friday for the month of October.

Stepping up its efforts to gain traction with consumers who are shopping for cell phones, Best Buy Mobile on Tuesday announced that it will "sell" four different phones for free on Fridays in October.

Best Buy has implemented several consumer-friendly policies in recent months, and this program is the latest. Starting on Friday, October 1, Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile retail shops will offer the Samsung Fascinate (Verizon), BlackBerry Curve (Sprint), HTC Aria (AT&T), and Samsung Gravity 3 (T-Mobile) for free.

At least one high-end smartphone will be included in each week's lineup. The phones that are kicking off the promotion include two Android devices and a BlackBerry. According to Best Buy, it will offer one phone from each of the four major carriers.

Best Buy says that new two-year plans are required in order to get the phones for free. Best Buy will not offer rain checks or price matching, and the program can't be applied to prior purchases.

Best Buy will announce the specifics each week at 1PM on Thursdays via its Web site, and Facebook and Twitter accounts.

"We are seeing an amazing amount of curiosity and demand for mobile phones right now, especially smart phones, and we want to give consumers another reason to visit Best Buy Mobile in October," said Scott Anderson, the head of merchandising for Best Buy Mobile in a prepared statement.

"While we already offer a number of free mobile phone options for our customers every day of the year, launching 'Free Phone Fridays' with a great smart phone like the Samsung Fascinate shows that Best Buy Mobile is serious and committed to bringing the best mobile technology and best deals to our customers."

Best Buy also offers many phones at lower price points compared to the carriers, and often ditches the pain-in-the-neck rebates that many carrier stores use.
