Pioneer has developed a 400-GB optical disc that exceeds Blu-ray capacity and could potentially store up to 48 hours of digital high-definition TV.The standard, 12-centimeter diameter disk, which Pioneer doesn't intend to commercialize itself, comprises 16 layers of 25 GB a piece and uses DVD-type technology to overcome interference that results from reading across multiple layers. The initial prototype is a read-only disc, but the same technology is also applicable for recording. To date, dual-layer 50-GB discs are the highest capacity discs commercially available.

Pioneer will detail the technology at next week's International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008, in Hawaii.PC World, Blocks and Files
