Black Friday Goes Green: Shoppers Seek Eco-Friendly Products Made In USABlack Friday Goes Green: Shoppers Seek Eco-Friendly Products Made In USA
PriceGrabber.com says it saw a 650% increase in keyword searches for "Made in USA" on Black Friday.
Holiday shoppers are paying more attention to what's in the products they buy and where those products are made, according to PriceGrabber.com.
The Web site's statistics show a 650% increase in keyword searches for "Made in USA" on Black Friday this year, compared to last year. The company's Holiday Shopping Survey also showed that 73% of online shoppers said they think it's important to buy products made in the United States.
That could be a sign that consumers are skittish about purchasing foreign toys since learning that several toy products made in China contained dangerous substances and materials. PriceGrabber also found that 60% of eco-friendly product searches fell under a "For Kids" category.
PriceGrabber said the top two "green" products this year are a Samsung's 245T black 24-inch widescreen LCD Monitor and an Apple 15.4" Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo Notebook. Other popular green products include a "fairytale plush" monkey, natural shampoo, and a Yoga blanket made from recycled materials.
The site found that 50% of the top 10 flat screen televisions are EnergyStar compliant.
PriceGrabber has also offered a few tips for consumers who want to give environmentally-friendly holiday gifts.
It suggests buying easy-to-ship products online. PriceGrabber says online stores avoid energy costs associated with running a storefront as well as cutting down on fuel emissions by eliminating the drive to the store and back.
And the company recommends doing away with wrapping entirely or using old maps, magazine tears, unused fabric, bits and pieces from a junk drawer, or the Sunday comics.
