Apple's iPhone 3GS continues to sell well and attract a lot of attention, but Research In Motion's BlackBerry Curve outsold it during the second quarter, according to data from IDC.

The research firm did not provide specific numbers, but it said RIM's Curve lineup was the top-selling smartphone for the quarter. One of the major advantages RIM has over Apple is that its Curve lineup is available for AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless. Additionally, there are multiple types of Curve smartphones that have varying form factors and features.

RIM's handsets did very well for the quarter, IDC said, as the BlackBerry Pearl, Bold, and Storm were all in the top 10 list. This is another sign that the company is catching on with casual consumers, and it said more than 45% of its approximately 28.5 million subscribers were non-enterprise users.

Apple is likely still happy with the sales of its latest iPhone, as IDC said it was the second best-selling smartphone for the quarter despite only being available for AT&T. The touch-screen handset came out of the gates strong and surpassed analysts' expectations, as Apple sold 1 million iPhone 3GS units during its launch weekend. The company's iPhone 3G also continued to sell well thanks to a price cut, as IDC said it grabbed the fourth spot for the quarter.

Palm's much-hyped Pre smartphone grabbed the eighth spot, and the handset has received mostly positive reviews thanks to its webOS operating system. Sprint said the handset broke sales records for the telecom, but it has yet to poach away subscribers from other carriers.

HTC's Touch Pro and Touch Diamond rounded out the bottom two spots of the list, and both devices feature a customized user interface on top of Windows Mobile.
