Borland Software Corp. has entered into a strategic alliance with consulting firm Capgemini to jointly sell their expertise in services-oriented architecture and software-asset management.

One of the first places they'll seek to apply that expertise will be with customers of software company SAP. Borland and Capgemini "will help one another gain entree to the right executive level as a trusted adviser," said Miles Mahoney, VP of worldwide alliances at Borland, in an E-mail exchange on the alliance.

Together, they can "identify business issues and pain points," then come up with a solution based on Borland software tools and Capgemini expertise in business-process and software-asset management, Mahoney wrote.

The Borland/Capgemini combination can help SAP customers customize their applications and fit them into a services-oriented architecture. With the right disciplines, SAP upgrades can be executed as "more of a managed and efficient process," he wrote.

Borland already offers software services but believed it would benefit in teaming its expertise with the on-premises, systems-integration knowledge of Capgemini. The consulting firm is focused on making software a more strategic and valuable asset, Mahoney wrote. Borland is working to produce tools and methods of software management that make it easier to modify, upgrade, and deploy software without running the risk of disrupting production systems.

"Our customers' ERP systems are critical to their businesses," said Adolf Allesch, VP of SAP solutions at Capgemini, in a statement on the alliance, and Borland's platform-neutral stance can help SAP customers leverage them for quick return on investment and future upgrades and technology additions.
