About 800,000 businesses in eight cities, from Orlando, Fla., to Oakland, Calif., have recently heard from the Business Software Alliance. The software industry's piracy watchdog group is giving any of these businesses that may have illegally installed software a 30-day grace period to comply with copyright laws. The group's been offering businesses around the country the chance to put things right without penalties since August 2000. Bob Kruger, BSA's VP of enforcement, says violations are rampant: "It's either a deliberate decision or reckless disregard for how software is being managed."
