CA announced Monday that it will resell StoreAge cross-platform virtualization and multi-tiered data protection solutions with BrightStor intelligent storage management software. At the same time, the company said Parallax Capital Partners is acquiring MultiGen-Paradigm, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of CA, which provides real-time, end-to-end, 3-D solutions for visualization, simulation and training.

For the second time in a week, CA announced transactions as part of an overall plan to focus on core business solutions and a vision for enterprise IT management. Last week, CA announced plans to pay $375 million in cash for enterprise application management company, Wily Technology.

The Parallax acquisition is the second collaboration between the two companies since 2002, when Parallax led a group acquiring CA's banking solutions, now called TriSyn Group. The financial terms were not disclosed.

The world's leading aerospace and defense organizations and several universities use MultiGen products. The company was founded in 1981. It merged with Paradigm Simulation, Inc. in 1998 and was acquired by CA in 2000. Its offices are in Plano, Texas and San Jose, Calif.

James Hale, managing partner of Parallax, said the latest acquisition is part of a larger acquisition plan to strengthen Parallax, which represents more than $1 billion in annual revenues. Sandeep Divekar, President and CEO of MultiGen said the company will remain independent, while continuing to offer a full array of simulation software products and maintaining customer support.

CA's agreement to resell StoreAge with BrightStor is aimed at helping customers simplify storage administration and enhance data protection in heterogeneous Storage Area Networks.

StoreAge Virtualization Manager uses a "split path" architecture for single-point control, virtual volume management and advanced snaphot and replication technology within a SAN.

When coupled with CA's BrightStor Storage Resource Manager, it controls costs and moves data to less expensive media as the data's business value increases. It also minimizes backup and recovery windows by providing online backup to disk and tape, local/remote data mirroring, rapid online recovery and remote vaulting. That helps IT administrators ensure data security, continuity and protection.

Storage capacities and practices are only able to support company growth for a few months before they result in frequent disruptions in systems and applications, according to an IDC document, "StoreAge Networking Technologies: Enabling SAN-Based Tiered Storage," published in August.

"Streamlined management of these environments is essential as the total volume of data grows across the enterprise, while the human resources to manage increasing volumes of data remain flat," IDC Research Director for Storage Software Laura DuBois said through a written statement.
