Computer Associates has the experience and the products to play a major role in the storage-management software market. But with about 2,000 software products, customers have had a hard time integrating its wares.

CA last week unveiled multiple product enhancements to improve the integration of its storage-management software. CA believes that high-end customers have four levels of storage: data on a mainframe, on Unix and Windows servers in a data center, on servers on the LAN, and on desktop and mobile computers.

CA debuted BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.5, a Web portal that acts as a console for storage administrators. This version is now integrated with BrightStor ARCserve Backup version 9, BrightStor Storage Resource Manager, CA's eTrust Antivirus, CA's Unicenter Network and Systems Management platform, and Unicenter Software Delivery. Enterprise Backup also lets administrators work with snapshot data-copying technology from EMC, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, and Microsoft, as well as archiving services from Iron Mountain.

David Hill, an Aberdeen Group analyst, says CA's portal could make its products more effective and let it serve as a key integration provider for backup and recovery across different platforms.
