Anyone remember the Celio Redfly Mobile Companion? This device connects a smartphone with a laptop-like display and keyboard. The Redfly Mobile Companion works with Windows Mobile devices, and now, the Redfly will support BlackBerry smartphones. A mobile professional's dream come true?Palm first introduced the idea of this mobile companion back in 2007 with the Foleo. The Foleo could give smartphone users access to a larger screen and keyboard through which to complete mobile computing tasks. Rather than being a full laptop, the idea behind the Foleo was to simply increase the display and keyboard of a smartphone. No on-board computing tasks were supported. The idea never got off the ground, and Palm killed the Foleo before it hit the market.
Later, Celio attempted to do the same thing. For the road warrior who only needs to check in with e-mails and browse the Web while on the road, something like the Redfly has potential. Many complain that smartphones' cramped keyboards and small screens limit their usability. Celio thinks the Redfly can solve that problem by providing a more computer-like experience.
It supports Windows Mobile 5, 6, and 6.1 devices. Now, it will support BlackBerries, too.
According to CrackBerry.com, the new Redfly for BlackBerries works via USB or Bluetooth. Two models will be available, a 7-inch model for $200 and an 8-inch screen for $250. Keep in mind, these companion devices don't have their own usable operating systems, a BlackBerry is required to make them work, and they will only offer the features and functionalities that are possible on a BlackBerry.
