This is one of the best uses for a smartphone that I can think of. I already do most of my banking online and from my phone. The only reason I ever visit a bank is to deposit checks. Chase checking customers, however, won't have to be troubled with trips to the bank for deposits.

JPMorganChase updated its iPhone app to version 2.3.1 on July 2. The big new feature? Check depositing from the iPhone. But how does it work?

According to Chase, customers have to have a checking account with Chase and have to enroll in the Quick Deposit program, which is free. Once signed in and enrolled, customers enter the account in which they'd like to deposit the money, the amount of the deposit, and then, using the iPhone's camera, submit a picture of the front and back of the check. That's it.

By allowing customers to deposit checks from their phones, it negates the need to make a trip to the bank or an ATM. Chase says there are no fees or charges associated with using the Quick Deposit feature.

Version 2.3.1 of the iPhone app from Chase also allows for quick person-to-person payments. Owe your buddy some cash, but don't have it on you? All you need is the Chase application and your friend's email address. You can send a payment directly to your friend's email account.

The application also lets users find branches, find ATMs, pay bills, check account balances and transfer money between accounts.
