COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — CheckPoint Software Technologies Ltd. has acquired network security software supplier Sourcefire Inc. in a cash and stock-option deal valued at $225 million.

CheckPoint (Redwood City, Calif.) plans to integrate Sourcefire’s (Columbia, Md.) “Snort” intrusion prevention and its RNA Real-time Network Awareness tools into the CheckPoint NGX security environment.

CheckPoint plans to keep all U.S. and international locations open in order to expand its presence in enterprise-based perimeter security tools.

Snort was developed as an open-source tool by Sourcefire founder Martin Roesch, and is distributed under GNU general public license rules.

CheckPoint announced this week that, in addition to including Snort real-time protocol analysis tools within the NGX environment, it will continue to support the Snort open-source community that Sourcefire has helped to generate and spread.
