Google's Chrome browser has been available to the Windows platform for well more than a year. Apple fans have been waiting -- impatiently -- for Google to show them some Chrome love. Turns out the wait is nearly over, as Google is preparing to release a beta version of Chrome for Apple computers in early December.Google has offered early pre-beta builds of Chromium to Apple early adopters for a while now. Up until recently, they were fairly unstable. Lately, the developer builds of Chromium have become more reliable. Based on some communication from Google's Chrome mailing lists, a full beta of Chrome is finally headed to Mac users in just a few short weeks.

Nick Baum, a Google Chrome product manager, said in a posting to the Chromium mailing list, "The extensions team has been working hard to get BrowserActions ready, and they're already working great on Windows and Linux. We've noticed that many of you have updated your extensions to take advantage of the new UI. We'd like to encourage the rest of you to do so as well! Why make the switch now? The earlier you switch, the more time you will have to polish your experience for our Beta launch in early December. We realize this means dropping Mac support for a couple of weeks, but we already have people working on that." (Emphasis mine.)

Wow. Early December? That's in the very near future. Mac users will surely shout, "It's about darned time!" and I don't blame them. I've used Chrome on Windows Machines for about a year, and have been desperately waiting for Google to churn out a version for Macs.

Google's own Sergey Brin admitted his regret that Chrome hadn't come to Macs yet. Though he noted that the developer build of Chromium has been around for some time.

The wait is almost over.
