Dell adds two blade servers and one rack-mounted server to its SMB product mix. All are aimed at optimal virtualization performance and power consumption.Dell has unveiled a blade server with a conventional CPU and another with an unconventional CPU, plus a rack-mounted server with a conventional CPU.

The blade servers, which use the M1000e chassis, are the PowerEdge M710HD and M610x. The M710HD is described as using Intel Xeon processors and as supporting failsafe redundant embedded hypervisors and hot-swappable SAS or SSD drives.

The M610X, on the other hand, can use NVIDIA Tesla general-purpose graphics processing units (GPGPU) which are touted as offering the same power as conventional CPUs at one-tenth the cost and consuming one-twentieth the power. It can also use the ioDrive Duo application accelerator from Fusion-IO, whose chief scientist is Steve Wozniak.

The new rack-mounted unit is the PowerEdge R715, a 2U unit with 24 AMD processing cores.

All three will be available next month.

And, obviously, all three are aimed at mid-market users with separate raised-floor server rooms who need to pursue virtualization to keep those rooms from becoming expensively powered air-conditioned furnaces. More choices are betterand the new options offered by the M610x could help with the power consumption arithmetic.
