A multitude of reports popped up in the past 12 hours that appear to confirm an official release of the Dell smartphone for China Mobile. That just isn't the case, says Dell.I was really hoping the reports were accurate. The world has waited for a long time to see a Dell smartphone. Turns out the mini3i, seen in pictures over the weekend, isn't the Dell smartphone we've been waiting for.
Dell spokesperson Matt Parretta called the device seen a "proof of concept." He told PCMag, "The only thing that we're confirming is that we're in product development with China Mobile. We were there as a development partner for the [Google Android-based] oPhone platform."
Last week a huge set of specs appeared for the Dell smartphone. Some of the details included:
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE class 12
Size: 68.6cc
103g grams weight
Dimensions: 58 x 122 x 11.7mm
Display: 3.5-inch nHD 640x360 LCD, 18-bit, 262K colors
OTA capable
Microsoft Exchange support
Google, AIM, Yahoo and MSN IM support
3 megapixel auto-focus, flash, 8x digital zoom camera with 30 frames per second video shooting mode, built in photo editor
USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
A-GPS
On-screen QWERTY keyboard, hardwriting recognition, multi-touch UI
MicroSD slot
Turns out that's not a set feature list. Parretta said, "We haven't named any products, and we're not confirming anything [in terms of product details]. We were there showing a proof of concept."
So that's the word from Dell. No Dell smartphone, yet.
