An unidentified executive at Taiwanese computer manufacturer Compal has revealed that his company will be building a sub-notebook for Dell Computer.A rival to the Asus Eee PC, Intel Classmate, and HP's imminent Mini-Note, the Dell machine is expected in June. Reports are that it will have an 8.9-inch screen and cost less than $500, a price that -- depending on its other specs -- could make it attractive to budget-minded businesses. Some confirmation of the report came from Michael Dell's coy reaction to HP's Mini-Note announcement: ""We will introduce a similar laptop," he said.

According to Compal, the manufacturer is gearing up to produce 200,000 to 300,000 of the new units each month. The June ship date is an indication that it will incorporate Intel's new Atom processor (also expected this summer). The Register, CNET News
