This must be the week of smartphone leaks. We've had leaks about Blackberry OS 6.0, the next gen iPhone, and some deep details about Windows Phone 7. Now we have our first hardware leak for a Windows Phone 7 and it is from Dell. The Dell Lightning is a slider, meaning the keyboard slides out for use. The quirk is it is a portrait slider, so the keyboard comes out the bottom of the device. Most sliders today, Pre excepted, slide out from the side, causing everything on the screen to switch to landscape mode. I am not sure if this is a design decision on Dell's part or if the new OS doesn't support landscape mode for all functions. Given copy and paste is missing, I doubt Microsoft has gone to the trouble to ensure every app and settings screen works in landscape mode like they did with WinMo 5 and 6.
As for features, this thing is packed according to the Engadget scoop. It has a "1GHz QSD8250 Snapdragon processor, WVGA 4.1-inch OLED display, AT&T and T-Mobile 3G, five megapixel autofocus camera, 1GB of flash with 512MB RAM plus 8GB of storage on a MicroSD card (non-user-replaceable, we're assuming), GPS, accelerometer, compass, FM radio, and full Flash support including video playback."
The slide deck that Engadget promises the device will support full Flash and Silverlight support, connected gaming through Xbox Live and of course the full Zune experience.
You can head over to Engadget to check out the pics and slides on the device. It is pretty slick looking, and it is good to see Dell back in the mobile device game. I'll be curious to see how they work with the carriers since, in the US at least, that is a new experience for them.
