Verizon Wireless stores are planning to open early tomorrow morning -- and in some cases at midnight -- to let eager customers purchase the Motorola Droid. Anyone think the Droid is going to stir up iPhone-like excitement?Earlier this week, Verizon Wireless noted that a good portion of its stores will be opening early in the morning on Friday, November 6, to accommodate those interested in buying the new Motorola Droid. Some stores are opening at 7AM, some are opening at 8AM.

Not all stores are opening early. In fact, Verizon cautions customers to call ahead to see if their local Verizon stores are on the opening-early list. Verizon specifically noted that Verizon stores that are located within malls will not be opening early.

If 7AM is just too late for you and you want the Droid sooner than that, you'll be able to get it at the Verizon Wireless store on 34th Street in New York City, which is holding a two-hour Droid sale from 12:00AM to 2:00AM. Word is that a few other stores in Manhattan may also be opening that early, but check before lining up late this evening.

My question is, are the lines going to have a handful of people, a dozen people, or dozens of people? The iPhone prompted lines to form at Apple and AT&T retail stores around the country for all three models.

Last year, the BlackBerry Storm coaxed more than a few to get out of bed early and run to their local Verizon Wireless stores. Will the Droid whip up the same fervor? Is the pent-up demand for an iPhone killer on the Verizon network strong enough to lull customers from the warmth of their homes in the wee hours?

We'll find out soon enough. The Droid will cost $200 when it goes on sale tomorrow morning.
