Things are busy over in the Motorola Droid X support forums. As great as the Droid X is, there are more than a few software bugs causing pain for users. Responding to an Exchange issue, a Motorola employee let the cat out of the bag on when the Droid X will receive Android 2.2.
The employee said, "Some Droid X users are experiencing an issue using Exchange 2003 email. Though the email is arriving on the Droid X, no notifications are appearing. A fix for this will be included in the upgrade to Android 2.2 scheduled for deployment by early September." Boom.
Most had expected -- or hoped -- that the Droid X would receive Android 2.2 this month. Neither Verizon Wireless nor Motorola had previously committed to anything beyond "this summer," and many believed that meant before August 31.
The Android 2.2 update will be an important one for the Droid X, as it will unlock a lot of features. Part of me wonders why Verizon and Motorola didn't wait until Android 2.2 was ready before shipping the Droid X. With such a major update being planned for mere weeks after the device went on sale, it stands to reason that customers might have had a better overall experience with the Droid X if it shipped with Android 2.2. Moving on...
One of the pain points about Android 2.2 for the Motorola Droid is that Adobe's Flash Player Mobile 10.1 isn't ready yet. After installing Android 2.2 on the Droid, I noticed that Flash wasn't included in the update. It has to be downloaded separately. There are several beta versions of FPM 10.1, but I was unable to get any of them to install properly. Turns out there's a reason for that.
It appears as though Flash won't be ready for the Motorola Droid until August 18, according to leaked Verizon documents. It will be made available for Droid owners to download then, so Droid owners have about 12 days to wait. Adobe's Flash Player, of course, gives the Android browser a serious performance boost by enabling Flash content to run in the browser.
Verizon didn't offer an explanation on why the gap between the Android 2.2 update and the availability of Flash.
