Those attempting to order the HTC Droid Incredible may have been dismayed to learn that the device is in such short supply that Verizon Wireless has pushed its ship date out to August. Verizon even lamented that the company would be selling many more Droid Incredibles were the handset actually available in quantity. Sadly, due to supply chain constraints, it is not.

Lest you worry that the Motorola Droid X, which goes on sale Thursday, July 15, experience a similar shortage, rest easy. Verizon Wireless spokesperson Brenda Raney told CNet in an interview, "While we are currently experiencing delays on orders of one of our more popular phones. We view that as an anomaly driven by a combination of supply and popularity. At present, we feel that we have done everything possible to ensure we have inventory to meet customer needs around the Droid X -- the proof will be in the execution on July 15."

The Droid X has won rave early reviews from tech sites, and with good reason. It is the best Android handset produced by Motorola and possibly the one of the best Android handsets made to-date. It should be a popular device for Verizon Wireless.

The Droid X has a very good 8 megapixel camera, can record video at 720p HD, and has an HDMI out port. The HDMI port alone sets it apart from much of the competition. It also has the popular mobile hotspot feature, and a fantastic 4.3-inch display. Its phone performance is excellent and the thin form factor makes it easy to bring nearly anywhere.

According to a leaked Verizon Wireless product sheet, we can expect to see the Motorola Droid 2 in the near future, too.

The Droid 2 appears to be nearly identical to the original Droid, with a few minor changes to the hardware. Most notably, it lacks the original's directional pad on the keyboard, giving the keyboard itself a little bit more breathing room. It still carries an iPhone-matching 5-megapixel camera and a 3.7-inch display, but there are some major improvements under the hood.

The most significant is a major boost in processing power. The Droid 2 ramps up from a 550Mhz processor to a 1GHz TI OMAP3630 processor and 512MB of RAM. That should give it quite a kick in the pants when it comes to performance.
