Drupal cleaned up for the second year in a row in the 2008 Open Source CMS Awards, taking home both the Overall Open Source CMS Award and the Best Open Source PHP CMS Award. This marks the first time in which a content management system has ever won the overall award in back-to-back years.Packt Publishing announced the winners of the awards over the course of this past week, and while the open source content management community doesn't have quite the equivalent of an Oscar, this comes pretty close. Minus the red carpet, as far as I know...

Below is the full list of winners. For additional details, follow the links.

Overall Open Source CMS Award Winner: Drupal First Runner-Up: Joomla Second Runner-Up: DotNetNuke

Most Promising Open Source CMS Award Winner: SilverStripe First Runner-Up: CMS Made Simple Second Runner-Up: (Tie) ImpressCMS, MiaCMS

Best Open Source PHP CMS Award Winner: Drupal First Runner-Up: (Tie) Joomla, CMS Made Simple

Best Other (non-PHP) Open Source CMS Award Winner: Plone First Runner-Up: dotCMS Second Runner-Up: DotNetNuke

A total of 24 Open Source CMS MVPs also were announced earlier in the week, with one MVP being selected for each of a number of prominent systems. The full list of MVP award recipients is on the site.

Packt Publishing started with nominations back in July and the finalists were announced in September. Although Packt Publishing sponsors and hosts the awards, they're actually judged by content management industry experts.

I particularly enjoy these annual awards because they shine a spotlight on some lesser-known platforms that deserve the attention. We'll talk more about some of the new names that have shown up on this list in the coming months.
