E-learning content provider DigitalThink Inc. said Tuesday it has agreed to acquire LearningByte International, a privately held developer of customized online learning content. Financial details were not disclosed.

The acquisition of LearningByte, which specializes in the mass conversion of instructor-led to computer-based training, will greatly enhance DigitalThink's capacity to develop and scale custom content for its customers.

The niche is increasingly attractive, as companies move online to reduce training expenses by replacing more expensive classroom sessions. "LearningByte offers very useful services and has a nice niche," says Brandon Hall, head researcher at E-learning research firm Brandon-Hall.com.

The acquisition will expand DigitalThink's content delivery from a hosted-only offering to one behind companies' firewalls as well. DigitalThink also inherits a healthy roster of customers, including American Honda, Thrifty Car Rental, and Northwest Airlines.
