E-commerce boomed in the fourth quarter last year despite the slumping economy, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Online retailers had $10 billion in sales for the last quarter, a 13.1% increase from a year ago. In contrast, total retail sales were estimated by the bureau at $861 billion, up only 5.3% from the fourth quarter of 2000. Online sales accounted for 1.2% of all retail transactions, the highest total since the department began collecting data. For 2001, E-commerce sales amounted to $32.6 billion, up 19.3% from 2000.
