Earthlink Inc. on Wednesday said it has added local search and news to the personal start page offered to subscribers.

The search service is an expansion of the Atlanta-based Internet service provider's partnership with search engine Google Inc. The latter company has provided search for the MyEarthlink service since 2002.

The local news service is powered by Topix.net, which monitors more than 10,000 news sources, including newspapers, magazines, radio, television and blogs.

Through local search, MyEarthlink subscribers can get phone numbers, web and physical addresses and maps for businesses and other places. The local news service is provided by default, leveraging zip codes for subscribers maintained in EarthLink's database. In addition, subscribers can track local headlines for up to five cities at a time
