Internet service provider EarthLink on Monday updated the spyware blocking for its members to include real-time scanning for unwanted software that prevents the stuff from making it onto hard drives.

EarthLink's Spyware Blocker, which is powered by technology from Webroot, an anti-spyware vendor best known for its Spy Sweeper line, now includes tools for identifying spyware as it tries to install, then deflects the software.

"Our latest version of Spyware Blocker was designed to stop spyware at the point of attack, before it gets onto a customer's machine," said Matt Cobb, a vice president at EarthLink in a statement.

Other new features of Spyware Blocker -- which is available free of charge to subscribers as part of the ISP's TotalAccess 2005 connection and security suite -- include the ability to schedule spyware scans, and a more powerful engine that searches the entire hard drive for spy software.

The Atlanta-based ISP was the first to offer free anti-spyware tools to subscribers, a service it debuted last year.
