Battle-hardened services firm scrambles to take the offensive.
Hit by a number of setbacks, EDS finally got some good news. Bank of America last week awarded the services company a 10-year, $4.5 billion contract to manage Bank of America's voice and data network as it transitions to digital and optical communications technologies. About 1,000 IT staffers will move to EDS.
Also last week, forest-products maker Weyerhaeuser Co. extended its services contract. EDS will run several IT operations, including network and server management for Weyerhaeuser's Willamette Industries group. Financial terms weren't disclosed. Meanwhile, EDS also says it has hired 11 top experts from government, financial services, and other sectors to strengthen its industry consulting capabilities.
EDS still faces a tough go. It has strengthened high-level service offerings, Technology Business Research analyst Humberto Andrade says, "but that's a very slow market right now."
