EDS officials Monday would not confirm reports that the company has won a multibillion-dollar outsourcing contract with the British government.

British newspapers over the weekend reported that an EDS-led consortium has secured a 10-year, $7.67 billion contract to build an intranet and run applications for the U.K. Ministry of Defense. The Sunday Telegraph and the London Sunday Times said the deal could be formally disclosed this week. An EDS spokesman says the company has not received any formal notification that it has won the contract.

EDS bid on the contract in partnership with Fujitsu, General Dynamics, and several other contractors. A rival team led by Computer Sciences Corp. also bid on the project, which represents the largest outsourcing contract ever to be awarded by the U.K. Defense Ministry.

The project calls for the winning contractor to construct an intranet and build and host applications for use by more than 300,000 U.K. military personnel at more than 2,000 locations. EDS is currently working on a similar contract for the United States Navy.
